Trans-national World Heritage

Today there are 20 World Heritage sites located in two or more countries, which makes them trans-national sites. The Victoria Falls, which belong to both Zambia and Zimbabwe, are perhaps the best known example.

The Struve Geodetic Arc was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2005 and comprises a number of triangulation (measurement) points. Together they show that the Earth is not spherical, but is instead flatter at the poles. This World Heritage site is located in 10 countries – from Hammerfest in Norway to Izmail by the Black Sea. Sweden contains seven such measurement points.
